Why Malaysia Has A Long Way To Go

26th October 2023

Ever tried dealing with Malaysian government offices? If you have, you probably know the struggle of waiting for a 30-second answer to your 15-second question. Whether you're wrestling with SSM, LHDN, JPJ, or any other governmental juggernaut, you're in for an adventure. You can't help but wonder if you'd get faster results by sending a message via carrier pigeon.

Oh, you've tried emailing them? Well, don't expect a quick response; their email response time seems to be on a coffee break of its own. When they finally respond (or if ever) the respond will take longer than the problem.  So, you muster your patience and pay a visit to their office in person, hoping for some human interaction. That's when you stumble upon 'The Queue,' where just two out of nine counters are open, and they're working at sloth-speed.

Why does this bureaucratic madness persist? It's the infamous 'government mindset.' If everyone's doing it this way, why shouldn't they? And so, you clock in at 8, escape for a leisurely breakfast at 8:30, answer a few emails at 10, sneak out for lunch, return at 3 PM, field a few calls, and, of course, there's 'minum petang' at 4. At 5, then  you finally punch out and head home, patting your self on the shoulder for a job well done.

If Malaysia wants to be a progressive country, maybe it's time to rethink the whole 'government mindset' thing. Government Sloths, be gone!"
